The art of digital feng shui

Let’s be honest with ourselves: When do we take the time to clean out our files? We collect mountains of data on our computers in the form of photos, music, apps and countless files. But over time, this can lead to a storage space problem. Our workstations at home or in the office can quickly become infected by the prevailing chaos, which in turn can affect our productivity. If our computers are as clogged up as the overcrowded highway on a Monday morning, it’s high time for a digital spring clean. This is where feng shui, the Chinese practice that promotes harmony between people and their environment, comes into play. It uses interior design and energy flows to improve happiness and well-being by emphasizing the correct placement of objects and furniture. In a cleaning campaign, there is only one right place for some things: the (digital) wastepaper basket. Who wants to rummage through (their) digital chaos every day? Nobody! Here are three reasons, inspired by the world of Zen and Chi, that nip even the last shred of procrastination in the bud and show why a tidy computer is an absolute must in the digital world:

1. data diet for the computer

We all know the feeling when our desktop is flooded with countless files that we haven’t touched for ages. Grab your virtual bin bag and go through your files for anything you no longer need. When was the last time you needed “Text_v5_revised_JW_2019”? Don’t worry, we all have them: Old screenshots, blurry photos, texts that were never finished. Get rid of it! The tenth empty folder in the folder? Get rid of it! Free your computer from digital ballast!

2. Home Office Feng Shui

Your home office is your sacred workspace, right? So why are you allowing it to become a digital battlefield? Cable clutter here, pyramids of crumpled notes there… It’s time to restore order! Start by clearing your desk of anything that isn’t directly related to your work. Untangle cables and make sure your workspace is tidy. Because a tidy workspace means a tidy mind and fewer distractions means more productivity.

3. digital Zen meditation

Last but not least: time for some digital Zen meditation! This is serious and not some new-fangled yuppie stuff. Sit down and let go of all the negative thought patterns that have become ingrained in your brain over time. Don’t fret over forgotten passwords or endless update notifications. Visualize how each deleted file takes a weight off your shoulders and makes room for fresh ideas.

As part of our Year of Values, we are tackling the first quarter head-on and calling for the Spring Clean-up Challenge. Under the motto “Strive for Clarity“, we see this as much more than “just” a clean-up campaign. It’s a sign for change! Together, we are creating a space that inspires productivity, creativity and positivity! Only with a clear head and a tidy workplace is it possible to stay in control. So get started, grab your virtual broom and sweep the digital chaos out of your life! Your tidy computer will thank you for it and who knows, you might even feel a little relieved once you’ve got rid of your digital clutter.
